The very bottom of the throat, nearest the chest. The hamza closes it completely and releases; hāʾ lets the air hiss through the same place without closing.

Common mistake
Producing them in the mouth. If you can feel it at the back of the tongue rather than deep in the throat, it has drifted forward towards ḥāʾ.
